The Toronto Star Stage, Nathan Phillips Square
As part of the TD Toronto Jazz Festival
We were honoured to perform as part of the 2013 TD Toronto Jazz Festival's big band series on the Toronto Star Stage at Nathan Phillips Square. This was a special show - a celebration of the 90th birthday of Phil Nimmons, one of Canada's greatest composers. The performance included a variety of Phil Nimmons repertoire along with the world premiere of a new suite written by Josh Grossman in honour of Phil. Get complete details on the TD Toronto Jazz Festival website.
Our annual tribute to Canadian big band composition. Music from Phil Nimmons, Hugh Fraser, Andrew Jones, Josh Grossman and more...plus the world premiere of a new piece by Toronto-born, Brooklyn-based tenor saxophonist and composer Quinsin Nachoff, thanks to a grant from the Canada Council for the Arts. Co-presented with Swing Toronto
With guest vocalist Shannon Butcher
We always have a blast when we team up with Swing Toronto, and this show was no exception. The original arrangements of the Count Basie, Duke Ellington and Benny Goodman big bands, among others - and the dance floor was packed. Vocalist Shannon Butcher joined the ensemble. See the poster.
More swinging! Some of the tunes we played the night before, with some bonus repertoire thrown in. We stretched out the solos and built the excitement with music that's good for dancing and listening. Vocalist Sophia Perlman helped us to swing all afternoon long. See the poster.
Our third rendition of the Radiohead Jazz Project. One set of Radiohead big band arrangements with the Toronto Jazz Orchestra, then one set with Toronto's best Radiohead tribute band, Idioteque. For more information, see the poster or read the press release.

With special guests Allison Toffan, KC Roberts, Justin Bacchus and Abdominal
Celebrating dance music through the ages
The Rex Hotel
194 Queen Street West
We turn The Rex into a giant dance floor and celebrate dance music through the ages - from classic swing to contemporary pop. We'll be joined by tap dance artist Allison Toffan, rapper Abdominal, funky vocalist and guitarist KC Roberts, and soul singer Justin Bacchus. Repertoire will range from original Count Basie and Duke Ellington charts to arrangements of pop and funk tunes created specifically for the event by local composers Mike Downes, Chris Hunt, Rebecca Pellett, Christian Overton and Josh Grossman. For more information see the poster or read the press release.
We finally got two of Toronto's most exciting singers in the same place at the same time! The evening featured pieces performed by the ensemble alone, pieces featuring each vocalist performing solo with the ensemble, and pieces featuring Alex and Sophia singing together in front of the band - timeless arrangements by Quincy Jones and Billy May, contemporary arrangements by Geoffrey Keezer and John Hollenbeck, and arrangements by Toronto composers including Josh Grossman, Vickie Yang and Rebecca Pellett. See the poster or read the press release.
Our tribute to Thad Jones, whose music provided a good part of the inpiration responsible for the creation of the Toronto Jazz Orchestra. We played Thad Jones classics as performed by the Thad Jones/Mel Lewis Orchestra along with tunes written by composers influenced by Thad Jones’ unique compositional style - Vanguard regulars like Bob Brookmeyer and Michael Abene, along with Toronto composers like Christian Overton and Josh Grossman. See the poster or read the press release.
We were excited to have been invited to close off The Rex Hotel’s 2012 TD Toronto Jazz Festival programming with The Radiohead Jazz Project 2. The evening featured new arrangements by local composers plus some of the same tunes that made the first Radiohead Jazz Project such a success. For complete details, read the press release or see the poster.
