O Canada

Celebrating Canadian composition
Monday April 23, 9:30 pm
With guests Richard Gillis and Hilario Duran
The Rex Hotel
194 Queen Street West

We return to The Rex Hotel for our (usually) annual performance celebrating Canadian big band composition. This year, “O Canada” includes the Toronto premiere of Suite 150, a suite in 11 movements commissioned by the Winnipeg Jazz Orchestra to celebrate Canada’s sesquicentennial. Joining us for this special performance are Richard Gillis, Winnipeg Jazz Orchestra Founder and Artistic Director; and outstanding Canadian pianist Hilario Duran.

Suite 150 – A Big Band Portrait was the largest project ever undertaken by the Winnipeg Jazz Orchestra. Eleven Canadian big band composers were each commissioned to write one movement which, together, make up the suite; each movement reflects the composer’s unique perspective on Canada or being Canadian. The completed work was premiered at the Winnipeg Art Gallery on November 19, 2017. Suite 150 composers are:

Dean McNeill (Saskatoon); Richard Gillis (Winnipeg); Andrew Balfour (Winnipeg); Fred Stride (Vancouver); Hilario Duran (Toronto); Jeff Presslaff (Winnipeg); Ron Paley (Winnipeg); David Braid (Toronto); Earl MacDonald (Winnipeg); Christine Jensen (Montreal); Michelle Gregoire (Calgary).

We'll perform the suite under the direction of Founder and Artistic Director Josh Grossman, along with special guest Richard Gillis; Hilario Duran will perform on piano for his movement of the suite. Additional repertoire will include compositions by Josh Grossman, Phil Nimmons, Hugh Fraser and others. See the poster.
